Of all the numbers in your chart, the life path number is the one numerologists look at first. It is drawn from your complete date of birth, so it never changes, and it describes the broad road you are walking: the lessons you keep meeting, the work that feels natural, and the kind of success that actually satisfies you.
How to calculate your life path number
Write your date of birth in full and reduce each part separately. Take 14 March 1988 as an example:
- Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
- Month: 03 → 3
- Year: 1988 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8
- Total: 5 + 3 + 8 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7
The life path number is 7. If at any stage you reach 11, 22 or 33, stop there: these are master numbers and they are read on their own. In Indian numerology the same total is called the Bhagyank, or destiny number, and it is read alongside the Mulank — the number of the day you were born.
What each life path means
1 — The pioneer
Independent, ambitious and happiest when leading. The lesson is to lead without shutting other people out.
2 — The peacemaker
Sensitive, diplomatic and excellent in partnership. The lesson is to value your own needs as much as other people’s.
3 — The communicator
Creative, expressive and social. The lesson is focus: finishing what you start.
4 — The builder
Practical, loyal and hard-working. The lesson is flexibility when plans change.
5 — The explorer
Restless, adaptable and drawn to travel and change. The lesson is commitment.
6 — The nurturer
Responsible, loving and drawn to family and service. The lesson is to care without controlling.
7 — The seeker
Analytical, private and spiritual. The lesson is trust — in people and in life.
8 — The achiever
Driven, authoritative and focused on material success. The lesson is balance between ambition and relationships.
9 — The humanitarian
Generous, idealistic and wise. The lesson is letting go of what has finished.
11, 22 and 33 — Master numbers
These carry the qualities of 2, 4 and 6 at a higher intensity, with more pressure and more potential.
Using your number well
A life path number does not decide your future. It tells you which way the current is flowing so that you can swim with it. Combined with your Mulank, your name number and your Lo Shu grid, it becomes a practical guide to timing, career and relationships.
